The price difference between an iPad WiFi and the 3G version is around $150. And the only difference between these two iPads is basically the 3G connectivity of the iPad WiFi+3G. If you’re not willing to spend more for an iPad unit but would like to turn your iPad WiFi to an iPad 3G of sort, here are three work-arounds.
Get a 3G Wireless Router
Now this might be the most feasible solution and the easiest one at that. However, there are not too many mifi devices available in the market today. The first MiFi device was introduced by Novatel and is being made available through various mobile carriers in several countries.
There are also non-Novatel MiFi devices such as the Huawei E5830 series, NetComm Pocket 3G Router (3G24W) and Sierra Wireless Overdrive. If you can get any of these MiFi devices, load them up with your local carrier’s sim, you can then use it as a WiFi hotspot for your iPad.
Mobile Phone Tethering Solution
You have two options for mobile phone tethering, either you use a Nokia phone installed with the Joikuspot Premium application or use a jailbroken iPhone and then install the MyWi application by RockYourPhone.
JoikuSpot runs on various Symbian S60 mobile devices such as the Nokia E series phones. JoikuSpot will cost you 9 Euro plus the cost of getting an unlocked Nokia S60 phone.
If you have a jailbroken iPhone, it is cheaper to have a WiFi hotspot for your iPad anytime, anywhere. Just get the MyWi app from RockYourPhone for around $12, and you’re good to go. John is using this to connect his iPad to his iPhone, and it works quite well.
Tethering Your iPhone to your MacBook Pro
Now, here’s a pretty cool solution for providing a WiFi hotspot to your iPad. All you have to do is tether your iPhone to your MacBook Pro (or any PC), share your Internet connection to your iPad and then you have instant 3G connectivity for your iPad. Of course it defeats the purpose of having a portable internet connection but still, you are able to connect your iPad to the internet via 3G network.
There you go, some solutions to make your iPad WiFi “always connected” even if there’s not WiFi available. Got any other work-around aside from buying the iPad WiFi + 3G? Please share with us by leaving a comment below.
